With September comes the cool winds, the rains, and the start of the picking season. Here on the stony white mountain shores of Pelješac, bands of men perform a ritual as old as life, itself.
You can see them from dawn to dusk clambering up and down the steep slopes, holding on to massive baskets of grapes, picking and cutting the ripe fruit from the vines. One small misstep and you'll fall. Maybe a few feet, maybe all the way to the blue sea far below.
But every year they're here, picking in the hot sun. Like the grapes on the vine, they return with the season.
In a few months those grapes will be something different, the famous dark Matuško wines of Croatia's Pelješac peninsula. And on the hills new grapes will be back. So will the men, here to pick them once more.
